Mauritius

If I had to describe Mauritius in one sentence, it would be "Hindu tranquility meets African joy of life in a picture perfect surrounding".

This year, we skipped the Christmas season or better said, we exchanged it for tropical vibes. Flip flops instead of winter boots, fresh pineapple instead of hot chocolate, watching sunsets on the beach instead of sitting on the sofa with a heating bottle.

The highlights:
- admiring the incredibly beautiful beaches
- snorkeling with a turtle
- hiking Le Pouce and Le Morne Brabant
- visiting a Manioc cookie factory
- touching giant turtles and watching lemurs play at Vanilla Park
- eating chicken tikka masala, palak paneer and fried noodles ... several times
- eating fresh juicy pineapple and mango fresh off the tree
- learning about vanilla

While snorkeling in waters of +-27°C was
always more than pleasant, hiking in humid air of up to 80% in combination with temperatures around 30°C was rather challenging. If there was no wind it felt close to unbearable, like on the way up to the mountain cross of Le Morne Brabant. A girl on the way down saw me struggling and said "stay strong, it's worth it"... so that is what I repeatedly told myself and continued scrambling up. And she was right. Even though she meant the view from up there was worth it, to me it was the fact that I made it to the top despite my doubts.

All in all, Mauritius was full of diversity, countless sights for sore eyes and the perfect winter getaway.
