Cuatro Canarias - summary

So after visiting four of the Canarias, I am surprised how different they were.

TENERIFE  - the one with the highest peak.
...If you are looking for more infrastructure,  entertainment, party, beach, shopping, the possibility of speaking German and getting a Schnitzel with an option to go see beautiful spots in the backlands of the island as well as visiting the highest mountain of Spain, then Tenerife is yours to go.
My highlight: parque nacional del Teide.

LA GOMERA - the one with a hundred valleys
...If you love the lush green, are amazed by impressive mountains steeply sloping down to sea level and love hiking, choose La Gomera. Thousands of palm trees sometimes make you wonder whether Miami Vice was filmed here. A laid back atmosphere mixed with stunning views is guaranteed.
My highlight: walk on the La Merica plateau.

EL HIERRO - the smallest yet underestimated one
...On this island, nature seems to be performing a work of art. So many volcano calderas make you feel close to evolution. You may walk on black lava rocks, feel the heat of the sun radiate. You literally see how the trade wind works, clouds swelling over the hilltops. Be prepared for adventurous, windy and steep roads, sure paved but without barriers and just about wide enough for two cars passing slowly.
You might now and then find yourself without cell service which is perfect to enjoy the pure silence or chirping of the birds.
My highlight: the walk west of La Restinga and the view from our accommodation to the slope of El Golfo.

LA PALMA - the one with the most recent volcano eruption
...despite its name, there are not as many palm trees on La Palma as on La Gomera.
The island seems to offer a bit of everything the other 3 offered. From mountain to beach, from forest to plantations, museums, local food, ...
My highlight: the explanation of the banana plant at the museum and the rum tasting.

No matter which one you might choose to visit, listen to Baz Luhrmann's Sunscreen song. All of it is good advice!
